An old, good friend asked me to create a gift for his wife who got some terrible news about cancer this year. Ted Lasso is a favorite of hers, as are its awesome lessons, so it became my favorite cartoon/illustration project to end the year. Happy New Year!

It's still early in the season, and no one's seat is immune from heating up...

Looking at McMahon's breadth of work, a strong indication of how little talent the Rockies have built or bought. Brutal.

Latest for Mile High Sports Magazine. Someday, someone will write a book on the various reasons why Primetime's son fell like a rock in the NFL draft. Arguably the best college QB of 2024-25 season, Shedeur Sanders was picked in the 5th round. An amazing turn of events for a player many thought had a chance of being drafted number one overall.

Malcolm X 100 years

On Malcolm X's 100th birthday, a tribute to a man cut down before he could realize his full potential. Appearing in Bernd Pohlenz's Black Power Cartoon Collection to be seen by 1000s in Dortmund. A firebrand for black rights in America, Malcolm made a distinct pivot away from violence to a different path in 1964. After a visit to Mecca, he felt more connected with people of all colors, religions, and backgrounds, while also becoming aware of the hypocrisies and corruption within the Nation of Islam. His refusal to "just go along" and continued vocal presence made his assassination an unfortunate certainty.

College Football NIL Difference

Recent cartoon for WoodyPaige.com. A new era is fully realized in college football and probably basketball as well. With essentially no transfer limits, schools and their collectives with deep pockets will build hard-to-beat goliaths like we just witnessed with Ohio State. Kinda makes you wonder how the SEC dominated in the years prior....

End of the Denver Nuggets Bench

The Nuggies have the best basketball player in the world (sorry Shai) and some other studs on the first team, but the bench is a serious liability - both on the court and against the salary cap. Playoffs could be interesting and a massive coaching test for Michael Malone.

Russell Westbrook has been a nice addition for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. Valuable and entertaining on-court, as well as off! The pieces are there for another run to the championship, if only Jamal Murray '24 can revert back to Jamal '22. Go Nuggs!

Rudolph Lecter Holiday

Here's a somewhat twisted cartoon for the season. Asks the question what if Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer's love interest (yes, in the old animated show it's Clarice) turned a bit Lecterish. As in Hannibal Lecter, from Silence of the Lambs, who shared the screen with Clarice Starling. A mashup that's perhaps not for everyone!

Gradishar Gains Hall of Fame

Cartoon featuring the induction of one of the truly outstanding Denver Broncos into the Football Hall of Fame. An NFL Defensive MVP and 7-time All-Pro, Randy Gradishar AVERAGED over 200 tackles/year. When he retired, his tackle count wasn't simply the most in Bronco history, they were the most in NFL history. Tom Jackson: "Best tackler I had ever seen." Gradishar didn't just tackle, he's also in the top 10 linebackers for interceptions and fumble recoveries. Also long overdue as the first representative of the Orange Crush defense of the 70s and 80s, regarded as one of the best of all time.

The latest for WoodyPaige.com. A rough day this past week in the United States - we lost 2 transcendent athletes: Dikembe and Pete Rose. One of them devoted his post-athletic career signing autographs for money, the other left a far bigger impact...in both his homeland and his adopted country.

NBA Changes to Assist Defense

Cartoon for WoodyPaige.com, a leading online platform for sports commentary.

With a regular season in the books and deep into the playoffs, the NBA can look back at an offensive explosion that averaged over 114 points per team per game.
Rules changes that limit hand-checking, zone defenses, and crowding shooter landing space (among other things) set the foundation for higher scoring many years back. Highly skilled shooters like Steph Curry threw gasoline on the fire, with 3 point shooting accuracy we've never seen before.
Importantly, facets of the European game were also effectively absorbed into the NBA by way of hard-to-miss offensive MVPs and stars like Nikola Jokic, Giannis Aantetokounmpo and Luka Doncic.
Defenses have mostly not been able to keep up, so scoring has soared. Week in and out, teams routinely posted scores in the 130s. Twice the combined scores of teams topped 300 points.
Fans love scoring in nearly every sport, but to what degree? This will be the question the NBA asks itself this off-season, so don't be surprised if we see some interesting changes come October 2024.
