“Playground”, the cartoon by Dutch artist Tjeerd Royaards, is our favorite among the Daily Toons of 2025. This outstanding work boils the current global politics of the old - and certainly also the new – year down to its true essence: Anyone who hasn't already guessed it can now be sure that our world seems to be ruled by ignorant, difficult-to-educate toddlers, by prepubescent, behaviorally conspicuous backyard bullies who want to check out their limits. And they always find a victim - the weaker one!
In his cartoon, Tjeerd Royaards achieves an extremely quick, immediately comprehensible effect at first glance; not the slightest explanation is necessary for his unmistakable statement. Nevertheless, he demonstrates his great love for small details on a second level, for example by depicting the logo of the United Nations on the wall of a dark playground corner with a kind of colorful kindergarten-style lettering. And the artist doesn't forget the snotty EU brat either, dangling bored in the background on his child's swing. The poor little guy is a high-nosed but timid overachiever who can't manage to swing himself up. The ropes of his swing hang vertically, and his feet have long since worn the grass down from countless failed attempts to climb. Fainting is his fate. Since the „children“ are already old anyway, they will never grow up, and the tragedy must go on for now...
