Turkish authorities have continued their crackdown on opposition-led municipalities. In recent days, police detained Erdal Beşikçioğlu, the CHP mayor of Etimesgut, along with dozens of other municipal officials in investigations spanning multiple provinces. Just days earlier, another opposition district mayor in Istanbul was also detained as part of an expanding series of corruption probes targeting CHP-run municipalities. The Turkish government says the investigations concern criminal offenses and are being conducted independently by the judiciary.

These latest arrests follow the imprisonment of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul and widely regarded as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's strongest political rival. İmamoğlu has remained in custody since 2025 while facing multiple criminal charges. He and the opposition argue that the prosecutions are politically motivated, whereas the government insists the cases are legitimate and unrelated to politics.

Human rights organizations and international observers have expressed concern that the growing number of investigations, arrests, and prosecutions targeting opposition politicians is undermining democratic institutions, political pluralism, and judicial independence in Turkey. Turkish authorities reject those accusations and maintain that the rule of law applies equally to all citizens.
