Iran and Oman are nearing an understanding on a temporary route for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, but the waterway has not yet been fully reopened. Iran says the agreement alone is insufficient and that reopening depends on wider conditions, including U.S. compensation, sanctions relief and an end to what Tehran calls U.S. aggression.

A proposed arrangement could give Iran significant control over inbound maritime traffic through the strait, while the United States has sought unrestricted, fee-free passage. Iran has also been considering legislation that would prohibit ships from the United States, Israel and other countries it considers hostile from using the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route, and disruption to shipping has continued despite diplomatic efforts to restore normal traffic.
