Ultimately, what we are experiencing worldwide, all the escalation in politics, all the radicalization of religion, is the assertion of a severely wounded identity that has become toxic at its core. Here, the feeling of inferiority is compensated for by marginalizing and condemning others, overestimating one's own power and humiliating, killing and belittling others. It is an old pattern: there is always a scapegoat. In the West it is migrants, foreigners, dissidents, marginalized groups, etc., in Afghanistan it is women, apostates, infidels - it is always the weaker ones who are looked down upon. The sad thing is that this has worked brilliantly for centuries and will continue to do so, to the great detriment of all people.
